Obituary for Veronica Rose Schalk
Veronica “Bill” Schalk (Murmur) passed away peacefully on November 16, 2014 at 101 years of age. She was born on January 20, 1913 to Polish immigrants Agatha and George Barthol of Overland park Kansas. She met her husband August Schalk at Christmas Eve Mass and they were married 5 years later. They lived most of their married life on a 150 acre farm in Lenexa Kansas. August passed away March 8, 2001. Bill was raised on a dairy farm, which she worked after completing elementary school. She milked cows and worked hard in the fields plowing, disking, and planting. She made money through the years selling various farm items (eggs, vegetables, and chickens), babysitting, and cleaning homes. She also worked for the Agricultural Hall of Fame in the early 1970’s and Hen House Grocery Store in the late 1990’s-early 2000 (that’s right, she was in her late 80’s early 90’s in age at that time). At Hen House she was a sacker, and loaded groceries in cars for people. Many people that came across her thought she may have needed the money, but she did it purely for the socialization and to be doing something. Don’t be fooled, she did enjoy the tips as well, which she raked in …who wouldn’t tip a 90 year old women! Besides a strong work ethic, Bill was the warmest person you could know. She was a caregiver at heart, and was always taking care of someone in need. She nursed many people back to health, or cared for them as they crossed over to Heaven. Her volunteer work was numerous. She volunteered at her beloved church St. Pauls in Olathe, making funeral dinners, baking pies, hand making baby quilts, and anything else they may have needed. She also volunteered for many years at the Kansas City Soup Kitchen. She had many hobbies that she enjoyed such as: playing cards with friends, watching KU Basketball, polka dancing, playing the slots at the local casino, camping, and sled riding . Some of her happiest times were fishing at her farm, or at her son Gerald’s farm. One of the more recent events that she enjoyed was walking the Susan B. Komen Race for a Cure. She walked this several years in memory of her sisters who passed away from breast cancer. Her last walk was at 100 years of age. She also loved to help friends and family if they needed their homes painted. If you knew her, she probably painted your house at one time or another. She also enjoyed vacationing, and was fortunate enough to travel to Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji Islands, and several states in the USA. She also went on 3 Caribbean cruises in the past 10 years. Of course her greatest love will always be her family, who will miss her everyday. She was proceeded in death by her husband August, parents Agatha and George Barthol, and siblings: (Not in order of birth) Stein Barthol, Thomas Barthol, John Barthol, Ike Barthol, Frances Wimmers, Christine Ereth, Helen Honn, Ann Barthol and Agnes Leard. She was survived by her son Gerald Schalk (Pat) of Cameron, Mo., and daughter Connie Lakin of Kansas City Mo. She had 4 grandchildren: Lee Dittmer (Jeff), Alan Graves (Sarah), Travis Schalk (Amber), and Beth Hamilton (Jamie). She had 9 great grand children: Austin, Conner, Rachel, Ashton, Adam, Lillian, Bradley, Hailey, and Hayden. To know Veronica “Bill” “Murmur” was to love her. If you met her, you never forgot her, and you took something away that was just a little warmer because of her. We will continue to pass down all that she taught us, from generation to generation. A Rosary and visitation will be held for Veronica “Bill” Schalk on Wednesday November 19th at Holy Family Catholic Church 919 NW 96th Street KCMO 64155 from 9:00-10:00am Mass of Christian Burial directly following at 10:00am. Funeral dinner after Mass, and then Burial Service at Resurrection cemetery Lenexa Ks. In Lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to: North Care Hospice House.
Please help celebrate the life of Veronica by sharing a memory or expressing your condolences to the family.
