Obituary for Shirley Jean Cumberland
Shirley Jean Porterfield Cumberland of Kansas City, Missouri passed away at age 88 on December 26th, 2017 at her home North of the river in the comfort of her loving family.
Shirley was born in Norfolk, Nebraska on September 28, 1929. She was one of nine children born to Otis F. and Edith Violet Porterfield. On January 22, 1948 Shirley married Bobby Gene Cumberland in Aransas Pass, Texas.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her grandson, Matthew Guy McNab, her sister, Betty Porterfield Gorman and two brothers, Robert Porterfield and Corky Porterfield.
Shirley is survived by her seven children: Vicky and husband Bill McNab, Bobby and wife Vickie Cumberland, Nancy and husband Darrel Hofstetter, Carolyn and husband Darrell Pointer, Linda Cumberland, Elan and wife Sharon Cumberland and Ravin Cumberland.
She is also survived by her grandchildren: Rob and wife Elizabeth McNab, Loretta and husband Anthony Clevenger, Billy McNab, Nova and husband Brian Bradfield, Denise Cumberland, Corbin and wife Barb Hofstetter, Andrea and husband Lee Staples, Eric Parigo, Brandon and wife Nichole Parigo and Bobby Ray Treaster and many great and great-great grandchildren.
She is also survived by five of her siblings: Donnie Porterfield, Duane and Joyce Porterfield, Lois and Johnny Howard, Larry and Marilyn Porterfield and Kenny and Peggy Porterfield and by sister-in-law, Lanita Porterfield and by many nieces and nephews.
Shirley's highest priority in life was raising her seven children. She was widowed at age thirty-six and did a fine job of raising them on her own. She also worked for many years for Mid America Food Services, but she always put being there for her family above all else.
Shirley will be remembered for being the life of every party. She had a gift for finding the fun in every situation. She loved and enjoyed her many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Being in the company of children and going to the casinos were her two favorite things.
Shirley was very much loved in life and will be greatly missed.
Please help celebrate the life of Shirley by sharing a memory or expressing your condolences to the family.
