Obituary for Joanne D House
Joanne House, 92, passed away July 28, 2014. Memorial services will be 2:30 PM Tuesday, July 29, 2014 at Souder Family Funeral Home. Joanne was preceded in death by her husband, John House, Jr.; son, Gary Lee House; 2 brother and 3 sisters. She is survived by her son, Daryl (Annette) House; daughter-in-law, Pit House; sister, Jane House; grandchildren, John House, Gary John (Jennifer) House, Jennifer (Chad) Turner and Andrew House; 7 great grandchildren.

Joanne was born just Minutes after identical twin sister Jane. They were the youngest of 7 children born in Grand Forks, ND. The family eventually moved to Liberty where the twins graduated as Valedictorians of their class. They went to college where they met 2 cousins named John and Lee House. Because the twins would not be separated, they warned the cousins of their closeness. Their future husbands understood as they were close as well. Joanne married John in 1942 in Denver when he was home on leave and Jane married Lee and once again, the twins still had the same last names. The 2 families all remained close. Joanne's husband John passed away after 55 years of marriage. Jane's husband also passed away and she now lives in Overland Park.

The men joined the army during WWII and Joanne and Jane moved back in with their parents and worked for the Red Cross during the 4 years their husbands were away. Joanne's husband John was at Iwo Jima and the night before the enemy surrendered the soldiers were in the foxhole praying for their lives knowing the next day the bomb would be dropped. They awoke in the morning to see the white flags of surrender. John and Lee returned safely home.

Joanne was also the Regent od the William Boydston chapter of the DAR. She was a Beta Sigma Phi member and was the President of the Graceview Elementary School PTA. She worked at Ford Motors for 4 years before going to Whitaker Cable. She started there as a secretary to the head of engineering which she loved. Within a few weeks the President of the company asked that she be his secretary. She declined because she wanted to stay in the engineering dept. where she loved the people and her job. She didn't want to be in "the ivory tower!" He convinced her to try it for a day or 2 and she ended up being his personal secretary for the next 20 years until she retired.

She loved sports, football, baseball and bowling. They used to bowl at the Plaza Bowl as well as the Gold Buffet where they would eat then spend the night bowling in the Twilite Zone. Those were the "good ole Days". She also loved to knit and crochet.

She moved to The Gardens in May of 2008 after a brief stay in rehabilitation. Her son Daryl picked her up and said " we have surprise for you!" They brought her to her new apartment where she found all of her furniture and everything set up for her to begin her new life. She loved being there and said, "it was JUST the thing I needed". She enjoyed playing cards with her new friends. She played "Hand & Foot" for many years with her church group and others.

Please help celebrate Joanne's life by sharing a memory or expressing a condolence to the family.
