Obituary for William "Bill" Moon
Funeral services for William H. “Bill” Moon, 83, of Belton, will be held at 1:00 PM Thursday, September 12, 2013 at the Dossman Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Andy Davis officiating. Burial will be Saturday, September 14, 2013 in the IOOF Cemetery in Newtonia, Missouri.
The family will receive friends for visitation Wednesday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at the Funeral Home.
Mr. Moon died Sunday, September 8, 2013 at his home in Belton.
Mr. Moon was born December 30, 1929 in Rulo, Nebraska, the son of William and Elsie (Graham) Moon. He served in the U. S. Army and was a veteran of the Korean War where he was awarded the Bronze Star. He married Marie L. Finn April 10, 1952 in Joplin, MO. He received a business degree from Pittsburgh State University in Pittsburgh, KS. After graduation, they made their home in Kansas City, MO where Mr. Moon retired as CEO of the finance division (CFA) of Farmland Industries, Inc. in 1990. Before moving to Belton he lived in Hot Springs, Ark.
Mr. Moon served over 50 years as an ordained deacon in Southern Baptist churches. He began his volunteer ministry with adult literacy including ESL, prison literacy, and tutoring children and youth. He served as the volunteer literacy coordinator for the Arkansas Baptist Convention. He also served as the interim coordinator for literacy programs for the Texas Baptist Convention for two years. As a member of First Baptist Church of Belton he directed the ESL ministry from 2002 -2008. The North American Mission Board awarded him the Mildred Blankenship Literacy Missions Award in 2004 for his contribution to literacy programs.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Marie Moon of Belton, two sons W. Alan Moon of Naples, Florida and Dennis Moon of Katy; two daughters Karen Francis of Belton and Susan Rowell of Colorado Springs, Colorado; one sister Betty Shepherd of Cabot, Ark; ten grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers the family wishes for memorials to be made to the First Baptist Church Belton Building Fund.
