Obituary for Martha Anne Shubert
Martha Anne (Marthanne) Shubert died at Pleasant Valley Manor in Liberty, MO on July 30, 2021. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Alfred Shubert (PhD), and her older sister, Janet Walker Haynes. She is survived by her younger sister, Ellen Linder Walker Leake, and by her sister-in-law, Betty Gard, by her children: daughter Valerie Diane Shubert, and sons Geoffrey Craig Shubert, Christopher Charles Shubert, Karl Anthony Shubert, and Kurt Phillip Shubert, daughters-in-law and former daughters-in law, 12 grandchildren and one step-grandchild, and 2 great-grandchildren, as well as a large extended family.
Born Martha Anne Walker in a hospital in Jacksonville IL on Feb 1, 1935, second of the three daughters of Lucia Ardeen Linder Walker and Neil Walker, she soon came to be known as Anne, and was called so most of her life, until she took the pen name Marthanne. She went to Illinois College and the University of Washington at Urbana-Champaign, where she met her future husband Harry Shubert. There she gave birth to all her children. Later she followed her husband to Ft Worth TX, and to New Orleans, where they both worked at what was then LSUNO. There she also attempted to get a PhD from Tulane.
Later the family moved to Rockhampton, Queensland, where they began to split up as the children grew up. Anne, her husband, and the four sons moved on to Darwin, NT. Then the parents and the 2 youngest sons moved to Hawai’i. During most of this period, Anne worked as a teacher, in colleges and secondary schools.
After all the children were grown, Anne and Harry moved to Florida. It was during this period that Anne took the pen name Marthanne, and began to publish some of her fiction (mostly mystery, and all but one eBooks).
After she became widowed, Marthanne Shubert moved to live with first her eldest son, and then the next oldest. She had been suffering from Lewy body dementia for many years before she died.
Martha Anne Shubert was greatly loved, and had a profound beneficial effect on many people—especially her children. She will be greatly missed, and, it is to be hoped, remembered fondly by many people.
The funeral will be on Saturday, Aug 7, 2021 at Gashland Baptist Church in KC (there will be a livestream). The visitation and viewing will start at 10:00am CDT, followed by the funeral at 11am. The burial will be at 2:00pm on August 9 at the Hickory Grove Cemetery in Wrights, IL, in the Walker family plot alongside her parents. As soon as feasible, her husband’s ashes will be moved to her side.
Please help celebrate the life of Marthanne by sharing a memory or expressing your condolences to the family.
