Maren Floyd Reitzel, fondly called Marti by friends, passed away Saturday December 26, 2020.
Marti was born June 5th, 1944 in Long Island, New York in the late evening. An interesting fact she enjoyed mentioning about her birth time. Given the time zone differences, she was born in America just as the first wave of troops were storming the beaches at Normandy during WW II.
She graduated from Brentwood High School in 1962 and went off to Lawrence, Kansas where she attended The University of Kansas, graduating in 1966 with a degree in Anthropology. This is where she met her future husband David P. Reitzel Sr. They were married on June 12, 1966 and were married for 36 years until his passing in 2003.
David, Sr., and Marti had 2 children; David P. Reitzel Jr (Tiger) born in 1969, and Katrina E. Reitzel, born in 1980
In 1978 she graduated from Kansas City Kansas Community College with a bachelor’s in Nursing Sciences. She worked as a registered nurse for 31 years. Her jobs included working both in hospitals and for the VNA giving in home health care.
Marti greatly enjoyed reading and was seldom without a book somewhere nearby. Her favorite drink was Diet Pepsi and the family joke was in the summer months you could find her by following the trail of empty soda cans. She was a fan of Star Trek since the Original series, rarely missed an episode of Jeopardy, and greatly enjoyed History Documentaries. She also greatly enjoyed having cats around as well and loved to BBQ in the warm months. She was a devote Christian, beginning as an Episcopalian and then converting to Lutheranism. She was a very logical and grounded woman. In retirement, she enjoyed working in a small flower garden she kept as well as scrapbooking old family photos, including playing with stickers, which earned her the nickname of “Sticker Woman” for the fact she would cover every inch of greeting cards sent to friends with stickers. Friends could always count on getting a delicious homemade fruit cake every Christmas from her as well.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, son, and sister. She is survived by her daughter and son in law.
Please help celebrate the life of Marti by sharing a memory or expressing your condolences to the family.
