Obituary for Louis Michael "Mickey" Howard
Louis Michael Howard, “Mickey”, 80, passed away at his home in Plattsburg, with family at his side, on January 16, 2020, following a battle with cancer. Mickey was born October 20, 1939 to Louis and Pauline (Hull) Howard in Smithville.
He graduated from Plattsburg High School in 1957. After high school, Mickey attended the University of Missouri at Columbia, and later transferred to Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville where he played football and ran track. He graduated in 1962 with a secondary education degree in Physical Education. He married his wife, Anna, March 9, 1984, in Camdenton, Missouri at her parents' home.
Mickey was a Clinton County farmer, a teacher and coach, a salesman, a pressman for The Plattsburg Leader, and later a machinist at Koch Equipment in Kansas City and parks groundskeeper for the City of Plattsburg. But his biggest job next to raising the family he loved so much, was being an ultimate fan for area sports. He coached many youth teams and was at every game possible. In 1997, after seeing a need for local youth sports, he and Anna started a youth football league in Plattsburg. He believed all local students should have the opportunity to use their talents in whatever activity they chose. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation in his name to the Clinton County R-III Education Foundation.
Mickey was a member of the First Christian Church of Plattsburg where he served on the board and was a Deacon. He believed in being a part of the Plattsburg community. He served on both the Alumni Board and the Park Board, and volunteered at many events. In 2010, he and Anna were honored as the Plattsburg Fall Festival parade Grand Marshalls. Mickey also enjoyed gardening and cooking when he had the time.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his grandfather, Miller Howard; and one grandson, Aiden.
Survivors include: his wife of 36 years, Anna; his children – Jeff Howard (Paula), Kansas City; Tim Howard, Smithville; Kitson Curl (Justin), Kearney; Becky Black (Trevor), Plattsburg; JoAnn Harper (Dave), Kansas City; and Geni Shoop (Quaid), Liberty; his brothers, Jerry Howard (Donna) of Plattsburg and Richard Howard (Evette) of Columbia; 13 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, three nephews, one niece; and many extended family members and friends.
A visitation will be Wednesday, January 22 at 6 p.m. at the First Christian Church in Plattsburg, with a Celebration of Life service to follow. A private, family inurnment will be at a later date. Donations can be sent to the Clinton County R-III Education Foundation, in memory of Mickey Howard, 800 Frost Street, Plattsburg, Missouri, 64477.
Please help celebrate the life of Mickey by sharing a memory or expressing your condolences to the family.
