Lawrence (Larry) Albert Knecht passed away early in the morning on Wednesday, November 2. He was surrounded by his two children and beloved wife after receiving the sacrament of last rites.
Larry was born Dec. 21, 1950 to Albert and Rose (Pfeifer). He grew up in Kansas City, Kansas and graduated from Bishop Ward High School in 1967. He attended Drake University and graduated with a degree in political science in 1972 and a juris doctorate in 1975.
In January of 1977, Larry met Laura Doty in the cafeteria of the Commerce Bank building in downtown Kansas City. It was truly love at first sight. They were engaged within a month and married in November of that year and spent the next 46 years madly in love.
Larry and Laura welcomed a son, Kyle, and daughter, Courtney. He was a devoted father and actively involved in his children’s education, athletics and hobbies. While being an exemplary father was always his priority, he was also a committed part of the legal team at UMB for over 30 years. When he retired in 2014 after an accomplished career, he spent his time enjoying his family and pursuing his interests. He was passionate about social justice issues, politics, wellness and music. He enthusiastically cheered for the Royals, Chiefs, San Antonio Spurs and Drake Bulldogs. He was a devoted Catholic and active parishioner at Holy Family Parish.
Larry is survived by his treasured wife, Laura, son, Kyle (Caroline), daughter, Courtney Barreca (Anthony), and grandchildren Henry, Joe, Georgia and Michael. He was predeceased by his father, mother and stepfather, John Quinn.
Many people will fondly remember Larry for his wisdom, guidance and encouragement as a youth sports coach, mentor and confirmation sponsor. His family will always treasure his gift of listening, constant support and generosity. He embodied the true spirit of being a good Christian, valuing the well-being of others above all else.
Services will be held Wednesday, Nov. 8 at Holy Family Parish. The family will welcome guests for visitation from 9:30-11 a.m. A funeral mass will begin at 11 a.m., followed by burial at Resurrection Cemetery. A luncheon will be served at Holy Family following burial.
In lieu of flowers, please consider supporting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Midwest Innocence Project or any other social justice organization close to your heart.
Please help celebrate the life of Larry by sharing a memory or expressing your condolences to the family.
