Obituary for Joseph M. Gibbs
JOSEPH MARTIN GIBBS, 85, of Kansas City, Missouri died December 18, 2013. Joe was born in White Cloud, Kansas on May 13, 1928 to Delbert Francis & Melissa Grace (Solomon) Gibbs. Joe was the fourth born of ten children.

As a young man Joe joined the United States Navy. He served our country for two years stationed at Pearl Harbor in Honolulu, Hawaii. Joe then moved to the Kansas City area where he worked as an automobile and aircraft mechanic retiring from TWA. After his retirement he enjoyed refurbishing houses, exercising at the Liberty Community Center and Vivion Road YMCA, and visiting with his family. Joe enjoyed monthly visits with his brothers and sisters at his sister’s house in Hiawatha, Kansas; attending Church every Sunday with daughters and grandchildren; eating meals with family especially at McDonalds. Joe loved cheeseburgers and vanilla ice cream cones.

Joe was a devoted family man, long time member of the Barry Christian Church, served as deacon and elder, Boy Scouts leader, and hospital volunteer. His hobbies included gardening, home construction and improvements, woodworking, archery, bow hunting, automobile body work and mechanical repairs. Joe took his family on annual vacations to Hawaii, Florida, Arizona, Texas, and Washington DC. He also traveled to Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, England, Ireland, and Alaska.

Joe was honored by the Veterans Administration in Washington DC and by Crossroads Hospice at Garden Village in Kansas City for his service in the United States Navy.

Joe is loved and greatly missed by all his family. He also is missed by friends at his home, Garden Village in Kansas City, Missouri. He was affectionately cared for by all the staff at Garden Village, Interim, and Crossroads Hospice. Joe’s family is thankful for their outstanding care they provided.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Marvin Gibbs and Robert (Bud) Gibbs and sisters Mary Burnett and Lillian Meyers. Survivors include brothers Harry Don Gibbs, Jerry Gibbs, Junior Gibbs; sisters Naomi Flett, Rebecca (Becky) Spaight; his children Bill Gibbs, JoEllen Foreman, and Melody Lair; grandchildren Miranda Jensen, Zach Henwood, Adam Henwood, Shana Henwood, Ryan Bishop, Alexander Sawyer, Andrew Sawyer, Alyssa Sawyer; great-grandchildren Cameron Jensen, Kaylee Jensen, Caden Henwood, Kayleigh Henwood, Jase Henwood, Xaylon Bishop.

Visitation is Monday, December 23, 1pm to 2pm & Funeral Service at 2pm at Souder Family Funeral Home in Kansas City, Missouri. Burial Service at 11am Tuesday, December 24, Mount Hope Cemetery in Hiawatha, Kansas.
