Obituary for Hortense Stoudmire Carroll
Hortense Stoudmire Carroll was born to Walter and Martha Stoudmire on September 13, 1932, in St. Louis, Missouri. She was the youngest of nine children born to the Stoudmire family.

She followed in the footsteps of her Christian parents and accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her personal Lord and Savior at the age of 5. She also learned about having a personal relationship with the Lord from her parents.

Hortense was blessed by God with a beautiful singing voice and became active as a child in her church choir. As a teenager she joined a Christian singing group and began singing at churches throughout the St. Louis Metropolitan area. As an adult she sang in the Chancellor Choir at Antioch Baptist Church in St. Louis, MO and was the director of the Children’s Choir at St. Louis Bibleway Church. She also sang in the Adult Choir at St. Louis Bibleway Church and ministered in song on the radio during their Sunday morning services.

Hortense married at a young age and one child was born from that union, but they later divorced. In 1954, Hortense married Denver Earl Carroll and they had three children. They divorced in 1962 but later remarried in 1976. She was widowed in 1988.

Hortense was called to the ministry and relocated to CA in 1981. She was ordained as a minister in 1985 and became a member of Crenshaw Christian Center in Los Angeles, CA. After nine years she decided to find a church closer to her place of residence, so she placed her membership at Loveland Church in Fontana, CA. While a member there she organized and presided over the Women in Ministry.

Hortense was a teacher by profession and began her teaching career after receiving her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education from Harris Teachers College in 1968. She attended Washington University and MO University earning credits toward a master’s degree. For most of her career, she taught elementary and high school students specializing in Special Education. She taught in the states of MO, IL, OK, TX, and CA. She also taught ESL students and helped them to achieve their United States citizenship.

Hortense was a blessing to everyone she met and was always willing to pray and give a word of encouragement to anyone who needed it.

Hortense was preceded in death by all her siblings, her son Mr. Reginald Carroll, and her daughter, Mrs. Marsha Hunt.

She will be sadly missed by her son, Evangelist Earl Carroll, her daughter in law, Mrs. Barbara A. Carroll, a daughter Ms. Linda Stallings; seven grandchildren, Mr. Jonathan Carroll and his wife Leana, Mr. Joseph Carroll and his wife Ashley, Mr. Joshua Carroll and his wife Marianne, Ms. Sherese Gil, Ms. Jessica Hunt, Ms. Joi Carroll, and Ms. Sophia Stallings; 15 great- grandchildren, 4 great- great grandchildren, lifelong friends, Mrs. Sybil Johnson and Mrs. Atlene McNeely, and a host of nieces and nephews.
