Obituary for Gary William Schouten
Gary William Schouten, a long time Christian school teacher, coach, and lover of history and sports, died on January 25, 2021 at the age of 62 in Kansas City, Missouri. Gary is survived by his wife, Sheila Schouten; his daughters, Heather and Ashley Schouten; his brothers, Arthur, Daniel, and David Schouten; his sister, Debra Moclaire; his nephews, Arthur, Brian, Steven,Timothy, Ryan, Matthew, Joshua, Christopher, Mark, Schuyler, and Jacob; his nieces, Kate, Melanie, Megan, and Autumn.
Gary was born on June 11, 1958 to Arthur and Elaine Schouten in Patterson, New Jersey. At the age of 15, he accepted Christ as his Savior and strived to live the rest of his life for the Lord. He graduated from Baptist Bible College in Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania in 1988 with a Bachelors of Science in Bible and Secondary Education with an emphasis in History. He taught at various Christian schools in New York, Florida, and Missouri over the years.
On June 23, 1984, Gary married Sheila Conine-VanAlstyne, a college classmate from BBC in Dunmore, Pennsylvania. On January 6, 1991 and October 26, 1998 respectively, he welcomed his two beautiful daughters Heather and Ashley, whom he was incredibly proud of, and he let everyone know it.
Gary had a passion for teaching and coaching. Among his favorite classes were History, Bible, and Physical Education. He often had the opportunity to coach Basketball, Soccer, and his favorite above all, Track and Cross Country. He had a love for all animals, but especially horses. Some of his favorite memories were showing Arabians with his family. Gary had a vibrant personality that will be missed by many.
A memorial service followed by a military presentation and visitation be held on Saturday January 30, 2021 beginning at 1:00pm at Faith Community Church in Kansas City, Missouri. Pastor and friend Danny McCubbin will officiate. Monetary donations to the FCC Missions Fund will be accepted in honor of Gary Schouten at 4214 NW Cookingham Dr. Kansas City, MO 64164.
