Obituary for Charmaine Rose Johnson
On October 12, 2019, Charmaine R Johnson of Kansas City, Missouri, passed away from lung cancer at the age of 74.
Charmaine was born on January 1st, 1945 in Chicago, Illinois. She was the daughter of Evelyn (and Edward) Leonhardt and the granddaughter of Max and Rose Geisel. Charmaine moved to Cambridge, Wisconsin as a child and graduated from Cambridge High School. After high school, Charmaine attended the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where she also worked in various departments as an administrative assistant. She later moved to and worked in Chicago, Illinois at the Merchandise Mart followed by a retail job in New York, New York. Charmaine also traveled internationally during her early adulthood visiting many European countries and learning to speak both French and Spanish. She resided for a few years in Rota, Spain with her then husband (and father of her children), James E Johnson.
Charmaine is survived by her 3 children and 4 grandchildren: daughter Cheray L. Johnson, daughter Laura A Johnson (husband James Threatt and grandson James “Tristan” Threatt), and son J. Michael Johnson (wife Michelle Johnson and granddaughters Tiffany Johnson, Brittany Johnson and grandson James “Michael” Johnson).
Charmaine was an advocate during the 1960’s for the women’s rights movement and continued to read voraciously and pursue knowledge for many years beyond those she spent in college. Throughout her life, Charmaine enjoyed gardening, cooking, music and fine arts. Most of all, Charmaine enjoyed spending time with her children and their families.
Charmaine spent her final days at the Kansas City Hospice House and the family requests that any gifts/donations be made in her honor to the Kansas City Hospice House located at 12000 Wornall Road, Kansas City, MO 64145.
A celebration of life will be held to honor Charmaine R. Johnson in the Spring of 2020 in her hometown of Cambridge, Wisconsin on a date yet to be determined. Details will be provided in the coming months.
